Why Precision Cutting Service Should Be Your Services Specialist for Water Jet Cutting of UHMW Parts

What is UHMW

UHMW is often used for machine parts in manufacturing, food processing and chemical plants the world over.  It is an ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene material that has exceptionally high abrasion, corrosion and impact resistance. Because it has a low coefficient of friction, it will outlive other materials, including metals, nylons, and urethanes. UHMW also has low moisture absorption, is non-toxic and self-lubricating. It does not encourage the growth of bacteria and meets FDA safety requirements for direct food contact.

Perhaps one of its best features is that it can be custom cut for virtually any application, which is one reason why water jet cutting is the preferred method for manufacturing UHMW parts.

UHMW Applications

There are many applications for UHMW, but basically it is used wherever wear or corrosion may occur, and wherever there may be drag. It is frequently found in conveyors. Saw mills, packaging operations, food processing companies and chemical plants are big users. So too are silos. Wood chip companies, for example, line the buckets of their front loaders with it so that the chips slide in and out easily. In short, it is used wherever abrasive or corrosive material needs to pass smoothly over a surface.

Technical Specifications

UHMW is available in sheets as small as 6” x 6” and as large as 48” x 120,” although custom sizes are also available. Thicknesses typically range from .125” up to 2.5.” Rod sizes typically come in sizes from .25” to 10” in diameter in lengths up to 10 ft. UHMW is also available in a variety of textures, grades and patterns.
